58 Iris Garden Square
PAM AWARDS 2010 | Honorary Mention for Alterations & Additions
The brief for this project is for an old pre-war house to be converted into a design office cum studio.

The fence was designed as a series of walls . A tall off-form concrete wall with random port holes forms one part of the street frontage — the holes were formed to provide views, ventilation and convey a sense of fun. Another part of the fence is built using recycled roof tiles laid in a bearer bond and set in a large planter.

A brief was developed around the existing frame — using the ground floor columns to define the reception spaces and meeting rooms with studios on both floors. Many of the existing walls were removed to create open floor studios.

The main roof line was extended over the new studio with two geometric pods anchoring each end of the space: an office and a library. The roof line stops short of the boundary and a long planter mediates between the studio wall and the fence. The high ceiling means that the studios on both ground and first floors can have visual contact with each other.
