Chapel of the Good Samaritan
2015
57 Ellis Road, 93250 Kuching, Sarawak.
The existing church is located at 57 Ellis Road, facing a quiet inner city precinct of Kuching. It served as the main sanctuary for the English and Chinese Congregations for Trinity Methodist Church from 1984 until 2004. A new sanctuary was completed in 2004 which was located at the rear; to cater for a growing congregation. The existing church continues to serve various religious programs and activities.
Since then, the physical appearance and upkeep of the church had been gradually neglected. Many ideas were considered such as tearing it down to cater for new facilities as the physical building environment was getting old and dull.
However, in 2014 a new journey had begun. The church committee had decided that substantial transformation was required to renew and sustain its life and use for the next 20 years. As the budget was low (not exceed RM200K), the design strategy was to retain the building's street facades and existing structure while inserting a new program which required a new layout and major internal additions and alterations. The ritual from entering the chapel to the altar was re-generated.
The church was successfully completed within 3 months and consecrated in October 2014 as ‘The Chapel of Good Samaritan’.
