Life Cycle at Lot 28
2013
7th Avenue, Kuching, Sarawak.
This renovation is located in an exclusive housing enclave in Kuching. At the time, a young architect couple worked on the design of these houses, and later supervised the construction on site until completion.

The design is based primarily on the re-introduction of natural sunlight and ventilation into a typical terrace house. The design learns from the Chinese shop houses in its use of the air-well in the centre of the house and is influenced by the Malay House with its close association with nature.

Imagine the delight when our young architect couple was able to purchase one of their creations (albeit in a sorry condition) to resuscitate into a new home for the two of them and their latest design, baby Eunice.

While all the fundamental principles employed in the design of the terrace house are still intact and functional; this renovation shows a maturity of their design approach. The most obvious is in the treatment of the surfaces, letting the chosen construction material to reveal itself as a finish. The polished cement screed of the kitchen counter and seating in the courtyard, in the brick-lace garden wall, the concrete paver “security” wall and in the rusted steel gate.
